The Nuts: Poker's best in January 2013

The Nuts: Poker's best in January 2013

PLAYER (NO. 1 VOTES) RANK (LAST) RECENT SUCCESS COMMENT
Phil Ivey (7) 1 (1) After earning $25,000 for his Round of 16 finish at the NHUPC, Ivey hopped on a plane and finished 30th at the Aussie Millions main event for AU$35,000. Oh, and since he was able to play online in Australia, he found his way online to earn $818,000 in just three days. I know we can debate Ivey's presence at be No. 1 here, but how can you really question his results? It seems it's another month, another million. Rinse and repeat. (Feldman)
Vanessa Selbst (2) 2 (9) Won the $25,000 High Roller at PCA for $1.4 million. OK, so she ran pretty good in the Bahamas. Still, few players put themselves in a position to run good as much as Selbst does, and her climb to the top of the women's all-time money list is certainly attributable to more than just run-good. (Ramsey)
Phil Hellmuth (1) T-3 (5) Runner-up at the NHUPC for $300,000 and finished fourth in the $5,000 PLO event at PCA for $33,180.. Hellmuth just can't stop winning. He narrowly missed out on becoming the first two-time National Heads-Up champion after Mike Matusow edged him out in a gripping heads-up battle. (Fiorvanti)
Dan Smith T-3 (2) Eliminated in the Round of 16 at the NHUPC for $25,000. The world will finally get a glimpse of Smith's brilliance from his NHUPC appearance and quickly realize that he'll be a player they'll get to know more about real soon. (Feldman)
Scott Seiver 5 (NR) Won the $100,000 Super High Roller at PCA, then lost in the semi-finals of the NHUPC. Nothing like starting the new year off with a $2 million bink. (Ramsey)
Jason Mercier 6 (4) Mercier was unable to find the money at PCA, but his solid Open Face Chinese game is keeping his bankroll strong. Mercier was the first player eliminated from the Aussie Millions $250,000 Challenge. He last won a tournament 13 months ago, #whenwillitend. (Mathers)
Marvin Rettenmaier (1) 7 (3) Fifth in the Zoom Challenge at PCA for $4,140 and named the GPI Player of the Year. Rettenmaier said that the extensive traveling may have taken a bit out of him on a recent Poker Edge. After a year worth $2.5 million, he can have a quiet month. (Feldman)
Antonio Esfandiari 8 (6) Eliminated in the Round of 16 at the NHUPC for $25,000. Picking up 2013 right where he left off, Esfandiari had a strong showing in the NHUPC and continues to be one of the most talented and entertaining players in the game. (Feldman)
Michael Mizrachi 9 (8) Four cashes in January including two final tables and a 77th-place finish in the PCA main event. Grinder's pattern continues. Win huge event, get forgotten in these rankings, win another huge event. Grinder's last win came in October … (Feldman)
Greg Merson 10 (7) Merson didn't cash at PCA, but did pocket $24,170 in the cash games online over the past 30 days. Merson goes for mega-millions in Macau, will he swear off tournaments forever? (Mathers)
